Assistance in opening an e57 file.

Post by Riche »

I am completely new to scan files and point clouds, so please bear with me.
To help out a friend I agreed to convert an e57 file to rcp... It has been a downward spiral since.
Recap will not import the file. I can select it to import and it just sits there, it shows the file like it is loading but the only option you have is to import another. It will not completely import it into the new project.

So I figure I need to see if I can even open this file and after a few searches I found CloudCompare and this site.
CloudCompare seems to be working. however it gets an unhanded exception opening the e57.

[06:34:14] CloudCompare started!
[06:34:15] [ccCompass] ccCompass plugin initialized successfully.
[06:34:15] [3D View 1] Graphics card manufacturer: NVIDIA Corporation

[06:34:15] [ccGLWindow] 3D view initialized
[06:34:15] [Global Shift] Max abs. coord = 1e+4 / max abs. diag = 1e+6
[06:34:37] [I/O] CC has caught an unhandled exception while loading file 'C:/Temp projects/Scan/XXXX.e57'
[06:34:37] An error occurred while loading 'XXXX': see console

Before I run and tell the guy the file is corrupted, could anyone reassure me that I am justified in saying so?

Would appreciate any advice,
Thank you
Richard

Well, we use the official libE57 library to read and write E57 files so we are generally pretty safe on this side.

However it might be a bug either from this library (it has not been updated for long) or from the software that generated this file. Would it be possible for you to send me the file or at least a small sample one that triggers the same error? (cloudcompare [at] danielgm.net)
